Wave 108 Photography

Images and text by Steven Parish

My photography is about a world of beauty where joy is possible, and about the mystery of this. I pay a lot of attention to the ocean. It is always making beautiful things happen.

In a poem about the sea, the French poet Paul Valery wrote: “The wind rises…we must try to live!”  I attempt to illustrate this one line of poetry in my photography, and that is really all.

Beyond this, I am an anthropologist and professor of global health and human development. I love poetry, which is like the ocean in a way.  I also love the clarity of good science.  I have seen Mt. Everest and stood on glaciers that have now melted away.  I have come close to death. I am a cancer survivor. I believe in kindness, generosity and helping others.

I donate part of proceeds from this site to good causes. These currently are:

https://climate.ucsd.edu/

where my kids and I have established the Earth Healers Award in honor of my mother and other strong women who have cared for the land and loved the earth.

And this cancer benefit:
